HOME
Home is where the heart is, and Ron and Julie's home is in North-West Tasmania, in Preston.
The Dexter is a small Irish breed of cattle, that first came to Australia in 1898. They are a dual purpose breed, producing excellent quality beef and enough milk for a family and the calf.
Ron and Julie's aim to start with, is in providing small house cows, that will produce the milk but also not compromise on the beefiness of the cows. They have been producing dairy cows already via their Jersey and Friesians, but now are looking forward to having smaller cows in size.
They also do not want to compromise on the genetics of the breed, and have bought excellent genetics from Rawlings & Kirup Park Dexter Studs. They want to produce polled red and black calves, to avoid having to dehorn the calves.
Ron has spent 50 years on farms and has a lot of hands on knowledge but is continually striving to increase his knowledge on pasture management and organic practices. Julie has an accounts background and tries to keep the business running smoothly and also has family history with dairy farming in Derby, England. Ron and Julie love being in the country on the farm with their cows and walk with them daily. Every one of them gets touched each day so they are very quiet.
The dairy is in the process of being built, which will allow them to start experimenting with making cheese.
They hope that you will return to their website as it is still in its infancy. Visit their blog for current happenings.
